About the Canterbury Winter Trail Running Series
We’re excited to present the 2026 Canterbury Winter Trail Running Series — four trail running events, one per month from May to August, designed to make winter in Canterbury something to look forward to. Every location is unique and not typically open to the public, so make the most of this opportunity!
At every event, participants can choose from three distances: Slope Sprint (5–7km), Midi Mountains (9–12km), or Epic Endurance (19–23km). Whether you’re new to trail running or looking for a serious challenge, there is an option to suit your goals and experience.
The series is built around great trails, strong community, and memorable experiences. Runners who complete all four events are eligible for series awards. Everyone can opt in for our unique medals and those that collect all four are in for a treat with a complete series finisher medal — a meaningful way to celebrate completing the full winter series.
Designed to keep runners active, motivated, and connected through the colder months, the Winter Trail Run Series welcomes first-time trail runners, weekend adventurers, and competitive athletes alike. The Slope Sprint provides an ideal introduction to off-road running, and our team is always happy to offer guidance and support.
Each course is carefully selected and designed to deliver variety, challenge, and “wow-factor” scenery — from bush tracks and ridgelines to creek crossings and open hill country, weather permitting.
We are extremely grateful to the landowners who have opened their properties to make these events possible. Their support allows runners to access remarkable locations in a respectful and responsible way.
Affordability and accessibility are central to the series. Early entry discounts, reduced junior pricing, and local fundraising at each event help ensure the Winter Trail Run Series remains inclusive and community-focused.
The idea for this series began several years ago, and 2026 marks its inaugural season. We are proud to bring it to life and are committed to delivering high-quality, enjoyable events. We welcome feedback and look forward to growing this series with the Canterbury trail running community.
